The company’s roots go back to 1907. From the very beginning, the business was deeply connected to Cleveland Heights. In those early years, the company collaborated closely with architects during the new-construction boom throughout the Heights, gaining access to many home blueprints that remain in the company archives today.
In the early twentieth century, homeowners typically chose gas-powered steam or hot water heating systems, as warm-air systems were considered undesirable. Fuel was plentiful, homes lacked modern insulation, and heating systems were often oversized and far less efficient than those used today—highlighting just how much the industry has evolved.
The business was primarily focused on new construction work in 1926, but by around 1940, its focus shifted toward residential HVAC service and maintenance—a core specialty that endures today.
In 1952, the business moved to 2277 Lee Road in Cleveland Heights, where it would remain for more than seven decades. In 2015, the company relocated to its current home at 2026 Lee Road.
The next generation continued to grow and evolve the business beginning in 1973. During this period, the company expanded its offerings to include whole-house repiping and residential plumbing repairs. Verne & Ellsworth Hann also became one of the first Cleveland-area firms to enter the air-conditioning field and was an early pioneer of service contracts that provided homeowners with reliable, worry-free maintenance.
