High winds are good, if you have a wind farm.
In Cleveland on January 11, 2017 we had sustained high winds and gusts recorded at 48 MPH. There was a significant amount of detritus in the community with some areas experiencing power outages.
High winds are not good for a lot of other situations. Wind damage is one of the top five insurance claims for homes in the United States accounting for 25% of all claims in the Northeastern part of the country.
Wind can also wreak havoc on your heating system. Extreme swings in barometric pressure can affect venting of your heating system as it exhausts flue gases up your chimney. This could cause some vent dampers to experience a permanent or temporary failure.
High winds can also blow leaves into an intake pipe of a high efficiency furnace. The restriction will hamper airflow which is picked up by sensors in your furnace ultimately causing a shut-down.
Intermittent loss of power can cause a brown-out situation which could potentially damage circuit boards.
High winds are a prime culprit of causing failed pilot-based through-the-wall heaters. These heaters are commonly found as supplemental heating systems in family rooms or garages.
If your home has experienced a Mighty Wind and you are experiencing any of the above heating outages, call Verne & Ellsworth Hann. Emergencies come in all shapes and sizes. Our company has dealt with them all by helping people out in a time of need.
