Yes, this photo shows  it’s the end of fall and the beginning of winter and the temperature at the time of this picture was under 20 degrees. But we were not covering these steps in order to keep them warm.  We were protecting these stone steps because they were built before 1900. To add perspective consider that these steps were laid before the Cleveland Museum of Art had been built, or Severance Hall, or even the Terminal Tower.  Where another contractor may have simply seen an old set of stone steps, Verne & Ellsworth Hann saw a home built with historical significance and did our best to honor the irreproducible craftsmanship. As we approach the anniversary of what became known as Superstorm Sandy on October 29th 2012, for those of us who lost power we wish we had the foresight to have a backup generator in place. We have all encountered a slow drain at some point in our lives. At first it’s annoying and you live with it. Then, it becomes even slower and you try an off- the-shelf drain opener. It helps . . . for a while. Then it becomes slow once again. You get caught up in the wash-rinse-repeat approach until you’re resigned to call in the professional to have the drain snaked. And in most cases that solves the problem. But for some of us who own older homes with drain pipes ranging in 75-100 years-old, there is no “Magic Snake” to solve what  you see pictured here.  For a pipe that becomes 100% clogged there is only one true solution and that is to cut the pipe out and replace it. Of the roughly 112 elements on the Periodic Chart of Elements one that you are unlikely to see is a heating element for an electric hot water tank.  But if you wake up to a cold shower one morning, it may become the most important element of your day. As evidenced by the adjoining photo, even an electric hot water tank has a weak link. Under a slow daily attack by harsh water conditions, the protective  insulator around the heating element will deteriorate. While the elements are replaceable the cost effectiveness is often a poor choice  when the tank is beyond seven years old.  Simply put, you do not buy a new set of tires for a car that’s on its way to the junk yard.
