With all the rain we’ve been having here in Northeast Ohio, I thought it might be fun to learn a few interesting facts about rain.

  • Rain is not actually “drop” shaped:   Scientists have concluded that rain is not actually shaped like a teardrop.  As raindrops fall, they encounter air pressure which flattens the bottom on the drops making them look more like hamburger buns.
  • Rain does have a smell:   Some plants secrete oils during dry periods.  When it rains, the oils are released into the air giving it an aromatic scent.
  • There’s a way to get less wet in the rain:   There is controversy over whether walking or running through the rain will get you less wet.  It has been proven that the faster you run out of the rain, the drier you’ll be, regardless of the additional raindrops you run into.
  • Rain may worsen asthma:   A lot of people think the rain lessens the impact of asthma but research has shown that thunderstorms can trigger asthma.  Winds associated with thunderstorms lift pollen and mold spores.

Here in Cleveland, we’ve been dealing with a lot of rain and the humidity has been high making it very uncomfortable.  Make sure your air conditioning system is working properly to keep your home comfortable.  Whether it’s a repair, maintenance or replacement, call Verne & Ellsworth Hann.

Verne & Ellsworth Hann, located in Cleveland Heights, has been servicing the air conditioning needs of Northeast Ohio homeowners for over 64 years.  Owned and operated by brothers Bill and Chris Hann, Verne & Ellsworth Hann is a 5-generation company and the only Hann family owned heating, cooling and plumbing company in Cleveland.

The first official day of summer is just around the corner.  The weather has been fairly mild here in Northeast Ohio but when the summer heat strikes, it will be time to start up your central air conditioning.  Do you know if your cooling system is working properly?  Many homeowners are unaware of signs that it may not be.  If you have any doubt that your air conditioning may need repaired, it’s important to call Verne & Ellsworth Hann as soon as you think there may be a problem.  In the meantime, here are 6 signs that your air conditioner may need repairs or replacement.

  • Air Is Not Cold:  You may find your air conditioning system isn’t blowing cold air.  The air coming from the vents may not be as cold as it used to be, not cold at all, or blowing hot air.
  • Poor Air Flow:  If you notice little to no airflow through your vents.
  • Thermostat Issues:  If temperatures fluctuate drastically between rooms, if your thermostat is reading 10 degrees off or more, or if the screen is blank.
  • Moisture:  If you notice moisture or leaks around or near your air conditioning system.
  • Strange Sounds:  Noises like grinding, grating or squealing usually indicate something is wrong.
  • Strange Odors:  Any foul or musty smells from your vents.

If you notice any of these signs, call the experts at Verne & Ellsworth Hann.  Located in Cleveland Heights, Verne & Ellsworth Hann as been serving the heating, cooling and plumbing needs of Northeast Ohio homeowners for over 64 years.

It’s important to note that the best way to avoid costly repairs, or even replacement, is to maintain your cooling system annually.  Manufacturers and Verne & Ellsworth Hann highly recommend this yearly service.  It is inexpensive and ultimately leads to fewer repairs.  Regular tune-ups extend the life of your equipment, improve system reliability, lowers utility bills, and gives you and your family peace of mind.  Contact us today to make an appointment.

Many neighborhoods throughout Cleveland, including historic Cleveland Heights and Shaker Heights, are known for their beautiful architecture.  Many of these historic homes were constructed with hot water radiators or baseboard heat and usually do not have any ductwork installed.  Because of this, you may think that central air conditioning is impossible for your historic home, and you may be using inefficient and unsightly window AC units.  If that is the case, think again: high velocity air conditioning may be the right solution for you!

High velocity air conditioning is a cooling system designed especially for older homes without existing ductwork, preventing the use of traditional forced-air cooling.  In high velocity AC, cool air is distributed throughout the home via a system of small flexible tubes that run throughout crawlspaces, closets, and ceilings.  Outlet holes for distributing the cool air are only two inches in diameter and the master air handler can fit compactly in an attic, basement, or closet.

Verne & Ellsworth Hann is highly experienced in installing and repairing high velocity air conditioning systems in older homes and will not compromise your homes architecture.  Homeowners across Northeast Ohio have depended on and trusted Verne & Ellsworth Hann to cool their unique historic homes for over 64 years.  A 5-generation company, Verne & Ellsworth Hann is owned and operated by brothers Bill and Chris Hann and is the only Hann family owned heating, cooling, and plumbing company in Cleveland.

If you are tired of your loud and ugly window air conditioning units but have no air ducts in your home, call Verne & Ellsworth Hann.  We have a custom solution for you!

A great way to cool off on a hot day in Northeast Ohio would be to drink a cold glass of iced tea!  The BEST way to cool off would be to install central air conditioning in your home, but we’ll talk about that in a minute.

Iced tea is one of summer’s favorite drinks.  There are many varieties such as sweetened or unsweetened, with or without lemon, or in flavors like raspberry, strawberry and peach.

Did you know recipes for iced tea date back to the 1870s?  The popularity grew after it was served at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis.

Green tea has become popular for all its health benefits.  It’s been known to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, some forms of cancer, help reduce blood pressure and can help control your weight.

Iced tea is a refreshing summer drink, but if you really want to enjoy the comfort of your home this summer, central air conditioning is your best option.  Even if your home is heated with a boiler or maybe you have an addition or a third floor that isn’t cooling properly, Verne & Ellsworth Hann has a cooling solution for you.

Regular maintenance on your home’s cooling system is fundamental to make sure your air conditioning is functioning effectively and efficiently.  Neglecting necessary maintenance ensures a decline in your systems performance which can lead to costly repairs and even replacement.

It’s important to routinely replace or clean your systems air filter.  Clogged filters block airflow and reduce efficiency.  When airflow is obstructed, air that bypasses the filter can carry dirt directly into the evaporator coil and damage the coil.  Replacing your filter can also lower energy consumption by 5% to 15%.

Your air conditioner’s evaporator coil and condenser coil collect dirt over time.  This dirt can reduce airflow and insulates the coil which reduces its ability to absorb heat.  Your cooling systems evaporator and condenser coils should be cleaned annually if necessary.

Make sure your condensate drain is not blocked.  Clogged drain lines may result in serious water damage to your home.

There are several steps to maintain your homes air conditioning.  It’s important to hire a professional for the annual maintenance on your homes cooling system.  Verne & Ellsworth Hann’s highly trained technicians will check the necessary components, including the filter, condenser, condensate line, coils, thermostat, temperatures, pressures, and refrigerant levels of your homes cooling system.  They will make sure your homes air conditioning is safe and performing at peak efficiency.

Verne & Ellsworth Hann has been performing air conditioning maintenance for Cuyahoga, Geauga and Lake County homeowners for over 64 years.  Located in Cleveland Heights, Verne & Ellsworth Hann is a 5-generation locally owned and operated company and the only Hann family owned heating, cooling and plumbing company in Cleveland.

It’s common to hear the saying “It’s not the heat, it’s the humidity!” when you live in Northeast Ohio.  It’s currently 78 degrees but the humidity is at 78%.

So what’s a comfortable humidity level?  Studies have shown that we tend to feel most comfortable at a relative humidity of around 45%.  High humidity can make you feel sticky, sweaty and extremely uncomfortable.

The most effective solution for keeping indoor humidity at a comfortable level is to add a dehumidifier to your homes heating and cooling system.  A whole-home dehumidifier is designed to continually monitor the humidity levels in the air and either add or remove moisture as needed.  A properly installed dehumidifier will keep the air comfortable at all times without requiring much maintenance over time.

The trained professionals at Verne & Ellsworth Hann have decades of experience working with all kinds of dehumidifier equipment.  Whether you are interested in having a dehumidifier installed, or in need of repair or maintenance on an existing system, Verne & Ellsworth Hann is the company to call.

For over 64 years, Verne & Ellsworth Hann has been servicing the heating, cooling and plumbing needs of Cuyahoga, Geauga, and Lake County homeowners.  We look forward to serving you too!
