UNICO -Part 2: The Hemingway House

The high velocity UNICO system for air conditioning older homes typically found in the ring suburbs of Cleveland are an ideal choice not only because of the small ducted solution necessary for minimally invasive installation, but primarily because it poses the least about of disruptive work on what are increasingly becoming historic homes. A lot of these homes are approaching century status.

These homes are a lot like the homes that are being paced on the National Historic Register country wide. They pose strikingly similar problems and the answer for climate control, particularly air conditioning, comes down to the UNICO system.

One such home is the historic Hemingway House on Key west. the home was originally built in 1851 in the Spanish Colonial style. Hemingway updated the home during his residency there beginning in the 1930s.

This native limestone construction posed an ominous obstacle to the curators and preservationists over the years: How to combat the intense heat and humidity of the Florida Keys. The discomfort was so intense from July through September that at least two visitors would faint during the tours every week.

The UNICO high velocity air conditioning system proved to be the answer. The local architectural review board was amenable to the UNICO system because it would not have a negative impact on the building aesthetics. An added bonus was the fact that the UNICO system could remove an additional 30 percent more humidity from the air than a conventional central air conditioning system does. Reduced humidity also aids in the preservation of books, artifacts and memorabilia.

Your own home can reap the same rewards. Like the Hemingway House, your home may pose difficult engineering challenges that requires a minimally invasive construction approach. The homes in Northeast Ohio probably don’t feel as intense as the summer months in the Florida Keys, but there can be extended periods of time when life can become miserable, especially in the evening when trying to get a good night’s sleep.

Verne & Ellsworth Hann is recognized as a Preferred UNICO Installer in Northeast Ohio. Have an old house and want to enjoy a comfortable summer for the first time in your life, call us at 216-932-9755.

  • I want you to know how pleased I was with the entire experience.  From the initial meeting with Chris through the installation of my new A/C unit.

    - Sondra S.( Shaker Heights, Air Conditioning Installation July 2017 )
  • Installers were spot on time at 8 am, took care not to track dirt into house, and were both courteous and friendly.  Excellent quality work to boot!

    - John S.( Cleveland, Air Conditioning Installation, June 2017 )
  • I have had several projects from Verne & Ellsworth, across boiler replacements, heating system installation, and air conditioning system set up and install.  Each of these times, Bill Hann takes a ton of his time to talk to my wife and I to learn about the issues we’re having, explain the root causes of those issues, and suggest fixes that we know will prevent the issues from coming back – not just paper over the issue temporarily.  Lastly, he always delivers on time – onsite when he says he will be, fishing when he says he will – and always makes sure every aspect of the job is completed, from material removal and set up, to equipment install, to clean up after the project.  A++ and highly recommended!

  • The unit is working very well.  The installers were very professional, showed me how everything worked, and cleaned the basement beautifully.  I would never have even known they were there.  Thank you again.
